Roger Williams Park
Victorian Rose Garden

Gazebo before restoring: gazebo-old1.jpg (74803 bytes)
Gazebo before restoration

The Roger Williams Victorian Rose Garden was restored and replanted in Spring 1999.  The original Victorian woodwork of the  gazebo and arches was repaired and repainted. A cobblestone raised bed was designed by noted garden designer, Chuck Carberry.

There is a brief history of the rose gardens of Roger Williams Park from the Park's Museum Archives  and a list of the roses that were in the park circa 1936

The Rhode Island Rose Society chooses the varieties planted and  helps maintain the garden in cooperation with Roger Williams Park.    Click here for printable map to bring with you to the park.

One special area in the garden is the Brownell bed. Dr and Mrs. Brownell were famous Rhode Island rose breeders noted for their work in hybridizing very winter hardy roses. One of our members, the granddaughter of the Brownells, Dorrie Nichols, has access to some of these hard to find varieties.   Click here for  HelpMeFind.com's list of  varieties bred by the Brownells, with information on each.

We welcome the public's help in maintaining this garden.  Join us for our
scheduled maintenance days to help and to learn how to care for roses.
